A short story I wrote a while ago for an exercise with a friend, that is all.

I have a date tonight, normally that would be a good thing except for the fact that it was set up by my mother. My mom is an amazing woman, and I love her to death but sometimes she can be a little much. A couple of days ago she called me at my job to see how I was and ask for a favor, the favor being a date with her friend's daughter.

Apparently, her neighbor's daughter had just moved back home after graduating from college and hadn't been out much since her return. Being that I hadn't been in a relationship in over a year, my mom decided it was time to act on my behalf. I was to take a girl I knew nothing about out to dinner, this was going to be an interesting.

I decided that I would make the best of it, and show her a good time. I arrived at her house at around seven-thirty after deciding against dropping in for a quick visit at my mom's place. Knowing my luck, if I had done so, she would've escorted me over, camera in hand, just like she did to me and my senior prom date back in high school. Ringing the doorbell, I braced myself for what was on the other side of that door.

She was a cute; long hair, glasses, and behind those glasses, a pair of blue eyes that had me at a loss for words. She introduced herself as Emily but said I could call her "Em" , and invited me inside for a minute while she finished getting ready, as she had been expecting me at eight. She ventured upstairs, leaving me in the living room to wait and take in my surroundings. The house was nicely decorated, nothing too fancy, I felt completely at ease... until her father came upstairs from the basement.

Em's dad had lived next door to my mother for the past five years, and they had developed a good friendship. From what I was told by her, he was some sort of scientist, she jokingly referred to him as a mad scientist but never to his face. He gave me a firm handshake and thanked me for agreeing to spend some time with his "little angel", and invited me down to his basement to kill some time until she was ready to go.

The basement wasn't a basement at all, it was like a laboratory you'd see in some type of science fiction movie. There were beakers, computers, you name it, everywhere you looked. In the corner of the lab was a fenced off area, it looked like some sort of cage. I guess my interest in this particular corner was written all over my face because Em's dad walked over to me and asked if I could keep a secret. He told me that only a few people had seen what was in that corner, my mom being one of them. I assured him that I could indeed keep a secret, my mom being one of his confidants making that easier than I thought it would be. He led me over and showed me something that almost caused me to ruin a good pair of underwear.

The man had a velociraptor, a dinosaur, something that was in no way supposed to be in that laboratory! My mom was right, he was a mad scientist, and I was about to go out with his daughter. As he explained to me how the creature had came to be, all I could think of was Dr. Alan Grant, and Robert Muldoon from Jurassic Park, and how just as they had, my initial thoughts turned to everything that could go wrong having such a creature alive. For fear of being rude, and having a prehistoric killer unleashed on me, I kept to myself any criticisms of his amazing specimen. Apparently, he had done some genetic tampering, and ended up with a docile creature that stood six feet tall, with teeth that looked like they could bite through anything, and two terrible claws on its feet. At this point, Em came downstairs to get me and say bye to her dad. She then, to my horror, put her hand inside the fence, and asked what I had thought of her dad's "second greatest achievement". I couldn't reply as I was frozen in fear as to what could happen to her hand if she didn't pull it out of that fence. To my surprise, the raptor, named Liz, just brushed her head against Em's palm, in a way that a pet would.

Still in shock from everything I had just witnessed, I completely spaced out, and didn't snap out of it until we were already seated at this small italian restaurant not too far from where our parents lived. I have to say that I really liked Em, but for the life of me, I could not get the image of Liz out of my head. What if one day she snapped, broke free, and tried to kill me as I was visiting Em? I could not believe what I was about to do next, but I didn't want to be eaten by a raptor. I excused myself and made my way to the bathroom, only to sneak out the window and run off.

Months later, Em was still in my head, I wondered how she was often. I was an idiot to bail on her the way I did, but I mean, she had a pet dinosaur, portrayed to millions of moviegoers as vicious killers for years! I think about visiting her and apologizing from time to time, but the fear of an angry Liz defending her master keeps me away from that area. I'm pretty sure that my mother misses me terribly.

She got me some cool things, made me awesome play-doh magnets and even gave me extra play-doh as I am in love with the smell of blue play-doh. She also gave me a picture frame but was unable to print a picture. I don't think she understands the comedic genius of giving me a picture frame with no picture in it but I loved it... I hope I made that clear to her, I'm told my reactions to things are barely noticeable at times, but man did I find it hilarious. I now have the frame at work with a picture in it, she's not too pleased because inside was supposed to be a picture of us, not Robocop and Sting.

The Hockey Adventure

Me and Pete(r) ended up with a friends tickets to an Islanders game that he could not attend. It was decided by Pete(r) that we would drive there as his lady had driven the car into the city for work. After work, we picked up the car and noticed the ride was was anything but smooth. We pulled over around Herald Square and discovered we had a bad flat. By this time it was 6:30, game starts at 7:00. We ended up driving to the west side passing by 9th ave where my lady happened to be at the time (I had her walk to the corner we were going to be passing so I could wave to her) and the following is what happened:

We get to an BP station and find out that their air machine doesn't work. We are told that there is a tire shop across the street. Upon inspection, we find out that the shop has recently relocated... yay.

Pull into a Hess on 45th and 10th that has free air and fill the tire. After a few minutes, the air can be heard escaping the tire once again. Luckily for us, there is a tire shop right across the street that hasn't relocated. We buy ourselves a tire for 45 bucks.

It is now 7:20 but we decide it's still worth it to go to the game. We drive towards the Midtown tunnel and upon exiting on the other side, are met with beautiful traffic.

We eagerly await getting close enough to Long Island so we can listen to the game we are missing on the radio, joking that we are probably missing the greatest game ever. When we finally get in range, this is what happens:

-I text my friend Jason D. to ask him the name of the goalie he asked to keep an eye out for.

-We hear that it's scoreless in the second period and laugh at our fear of missing something exciting.

-While we are laughing (and as I'm texting Jason that the goalie in question was not playing), the Islanders score a power play goal, a few seconds later they score one more and then one more. 3 goals in 3 and a half minutes. We laugh even harder because of it.

-As Jason is responding to my text, said goalie is put in and so I let him know.

After that it was all straight forward, got to the game at the end of the second period, saw Lecav score a goal, saw Stamkos and that was it, Islanders 3, Bolts 1. Pete(r) was nice enough to drive me back to Jersey and that is the end of the evening.

My 2009 NFL Post Season Theory

From observing the Postseason so far, I've come up with a pattern that already determines who will win the Super Bowl in Tampa:

Birds will always win.

And in the case of Bird Vs. Bird, Alphabetical Order comes into play. (i.e. The Cardinals beating the Falcons)

So if the pattern holds true:

The Cardinals beat the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

The Ravens (being a Bird team) beat the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.

And in the Super Bowl:

The Cardinals beat the Ravens in a game for the ages (and the birds).

This is just a theory and could almost certainly be wrong, but so far the pattern has held true, and as good as the Eagles have been playing, the Cardinals have been doing some amazing things... and C comes before E.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Sarah Palin's next faceoff will come at center ice at an NHL arena, not at a debate.

The GOP vice presidential nominee will drop the ceremonial first puck when the Philadelphia Flyers open the regular season against the New York Rangers on Saturday. Palin, the Alaska governor and self-described "hockey mom," will join the winner of a team promotion for the "Ultimate Hockey Mom" to drop the puck.

Last month, Palin visited a Philadelphia bar with Flyers owner Ed Snider, who has donated money to Republican presidential nominee John McCain's campaign.

"Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started," Snider said in a team statement Wednesday. "We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey."

The team will award all hockey moms entered into the contest with a free "puck-er peach" lipstick and four tickets to a hockey game of the Flyers' minor league affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. The winner will appear on the ice with Palin for opening faceoff.

FAMED PRODUCER JERRY FINN TAKEN OFF LIFE SUPPORT

In a story that's slid under most peoples' radars, incredibly successful producer Jerry Finn has been in the hospital for the past month after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage. This past Saturday, Finn's family made the decision to take the 38-year-old producer off life support according to Billboard, with a friend commenting:

"Even though he did make snail-like improvement these past 31 days, he is not any better for words and has not had any consistency in the tests that the medical team have done for him. At this time the hemorrhage has done massive damage to his body which will leave him severely disabled and in need of acute care for the rest of his life. We know Jerry wouldn't want to live like this in a vegetative state."

It is presumed that Finn will pass on without the assistance of machines; when there is any update on his condition, positive or negative, we will let you know.

Finn has been producing, mixing and engineering records since 1992, with many of his credits coming on some of punk's most groundbreaking albums, including Green Day's Dookie (which he mixed), Rancid's ...And Out Come The Wolves (which he produced and mixed), Blink-182's Enema Of The State (which he produced and mixed) and AFI's Sing The Sorrow (which he produced and mixed).

Finn has also racked up production credits with Alkaline Trio, Bad Religion, Pennywise, the Suicide Machines, Tiger Army, (+44), Morrissey, Sum 41, MxPx, Smoking Popes and dozens more.

We wish the best for Jerry Finn, and are keeping his family, friends and fans in our thoughts.

After the fun that was reading the survey results of engineers, my day went to hell. Put the survey report together and found out it was in the wrong format. I switched it into another acceptable format but it's still bugging me 5 hours after the fact. I take stuff like that pretty hard. Oh well... hopefully everything will work itself out.

Spent a little bit of time with the lady in Bryant Park before capping our night off at Applebees, helped to calm me down a bit and cheer me up.

My birthday weekend was awesome. Earlier in the week, a friend took me to the home run derby, that was pretty awesome. I spent Friday night at Barcelona with some friends from Barnes & Noble for early birthday drinks, after seeing The Dark Knight!

What an amazing movie, I enjoyed the watchmen trailer, it kind of reminded me of another action packed adventure, "Sneak the Dagley into the Movies" that's a good one right there.

As for Saturday, I wandered the streets and took pictures before heading again to Barcelona where I was joined by a slew of friends. I also took the opportunity to test out my ilford 3200 film, it only works in low light and the results are grainy as hell but still pretty cool.

On Sunday, went shooting around Coney Island (Got to bring all my lenses thanks to Jen buying me an awesome camera bag!) and got a few cool shots.

Only had a dollar on me this morning but my donut guy still gave me a large iced coffee and two donuts, he insisted that I needed to have breakfast. Hopefully this is going to carry on into the trend for the day.

I still need to post about last weekend, I'm being lazy.

Just processed a roll of black & white film and am pleased with the results. Birthday week has been amazing so far, seen wild dolphins out in Wild Wood while out there for the weekend, and went to the Home Run Derby last night. Poker Wednesday, Dark Knight Friday, still don't know what to do for my birthday.

Quite possibly.

Went to go see a Brooklyn Cyclones game with awesome friends, ate two foot long hotdogs, and the holy grail of Coney Island, seagull chicken...

Highlights of the day include:

Erica putting the fear of god into a woman, a child, and a small ice cream...all over a soft baseball.
Jessica catching one of the above mentioned soft baseballs with the aid of a foam finger.
A player for the visiting team named Juan Valdes, they played the coffee commercial whenever he went to bat.
Jessica getting kicked off one of those 75¢ horse rides for being too big.
Jessica's domination of the Q line.

I took a good amount of pictures of the ballgame with my Nikon Fe2, but being that it's a film slr, I can only hope that some of them came out.
